Trimming

Trimming is the process when the annual growth is cut. Hedges form natural healthy boundaries around many areas however, a well presented hedge requires regular trimming, to encourage dense foliage and aesthetic shape. Individual bushes/shrubs also have natural shapes, and if cut following this you'll find an annual cut is substantial. If you decide you'd like something different you'll need to trim more frequently to keep the shape maintained.
